Dry Eye Syndrome is a very common problem caused by insufficient tear production. Tears keep the eye moist, help wounds heal, and protect against eye infection. With dry eye syndrome, the eye produces fewer quality tears and is unable to keep its surface lubricated and comfortable. The main symptom of dry eye is a scratchy or sandy feeling as if something is in the eye. Other symptoms include pain and redness of the eye, stringy discharge from the eye, even episodes of excess tearing followed by periods of a very dry sensation.
Cataract is an opacity or cloudiness in the natural lens of the eye. Patients with cataracts complain of blurred vision making it difficult to read or drive. Most cataracts develop slowly and are related to aging, sunlight exposure, smoking, poor nutrition, and eye trauma. Cataracts are very common in older people - half of Americans over the age of 80 have had a cataract. Fortunately, cataract removal is a routine procedure.
Glaucoma also referred to as high eye pressure, is a group of diseases that can damage the eye's optic nerve and result in vision loss and blindness. People with glaucoma usually don't experience any symptoms until late in the disease. The strongest risk factors for glaucoma include elevated eye pressure, family history of glaucoma, advanced age, and being of African-American descent. Other risk factors include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, myopia (nearsightedness), high blood pressure and migraine headaches. Have your eyes examined through dilated pupils every one to two years for early detection and treatment of glaucoma.
Macular Degeneration is a medical condition associated with aging in which the inner lining of the eye, known as the macula area of the retina, suffers thinning, atrophy and bleeding in some cases. This gradually destroys sharp, central vision which is needed for seeing objects clearly and for daily tasks such as driving and reading.
